2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on Dutch Fishtail Braid: My Rapunzel-Inspired Locks.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
One of the best things about the Dutch fishtail braid is that it’s incredibly versatile.
If you have a square face, you can create a softer look by gently sweeping the hair to one side.
And if you have thick hair, you can create a more undone look by gently backcombing the roots.
Another great thing about this braid is that it’s perfect for any hair type.
Whether you have fine, medium, or coarse hair, this braid will add volume and texture to your locks.
Plus, it’s a great way to hide any flyaways or frizz.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
