Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features

When it comes to braided hairstyles for black women, one of the most important things to consider is face shape.

For example, if you have a round face, you’ll want to avoid braids that are too tight or too close to the face, as they can make your face appear even rounder.

Instead, opt for braids that are looser and more relaxed, with a bit of texture and movement to them.

If you have a square face, on the other hand, you can get away with braids that are a bit more structured and angular.

Another thing to consider when it comes to braided hairstyles is hair texture.

If you have fine, thin hair, you’ll want to avoid braids that are too tight or too heavy, as they can weigh your hair down and make it look even thinner.

Instead, opt for braids that are lighter and more delicate, with a bit of texture and movement to them.

And, if you have thick, coarse locks, you can get away with braids that are a bit more bold and statement-making.

✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match

  • Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
  • Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
  • Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
