2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on The Only 15 Braid Styles You'll Ever Need to Master.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
For square-shaped faces, I recommend avoiding braid styles that are too tight or too voluminous, as they can accentuate the angular features.
Instead, opt for a more relaxed, loose braid that creates a softer, more rounded look.
You can also try incorporating a few strategically-placed hairpins to add some extra texture and dimension to the braid.
For fine or thin hair, I recommend using a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle the hair before braiding.
And avoid using too much tension or pulling on the hair as you braid.
This will help prevent breakage and create a more polished, put-together look.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
