2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on Open-Ended Double Dutch Braids for the Holidays.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
When it comes to tailoring the open-ended double Dutch braid to your face shape and hair texture, there are a few things to keep in mind.
If you have a round face, you’ll want to create a more angular braid by pulling the strands of hair tighter as you braid.
If you have a square face, you can create a softer, more relaxed braid by gently pulling the strands of hair apart as you braid.
As for hair texture, if you have fine or thin hair, you may want to use a hair serum or oil to help add some moisture and shine to your hair.
If you have thick or coarse hair, you can use a texturizing spray to add some volume and texture to your braid.
Take a moment to review the proportions, textures, and timing notes on this page so each step adapts effortlessly to your own routine.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
