2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on 4 Dutch Braids: A Low-Maintenance Updo.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
One of the best things about Dutch braids is that they can be customized to suit different face shapes and hair textures.
If you have a round face, try a braid that starts at the crown and works its way down to the nape of the neck.
For a square face, a braid that starts at the temples and works its way down to the back of the head can help soften the angles.
As for hair texture, you can use a texturizing spray to add volume and a sea salt spray to add texture and a beachy vibe.
Take a moment to review the proportions, textures, and timing notes on this page so each step adapts effortlessly to your own routine.
Preparing your core essentials and workspace before you begin ensures smooth, consistent results from start to finish.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
