2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on How to: Dutch Fishtail Braid (Elsa Hair).
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
One of the best things about a Dutch fishtail braid is that it can be tailored to suit any face shape or hair texture.
For those with a round face, try pulling the braid to one side to elongate the face.
For those with square features, a center part will help soften the angles.
For those with fine or thin hair, a Dutch fishtail braid can add instant volume and texture.
To enhance this, try using a texturizing spray or dry shampoo before braiding.
Take a moment to review the proportions, textures, and timing notes on this page so each step adapts effortlessly to your own routine.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
