2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on The Best Braid Hairstyles: Dutch Braid Tutorial & Styling Guide.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
For those with a round face shape, try pulling the braid to one side to elongate your face.
For a square face shape, try a more relaxed, effortless look by gently tugging on the strands as you weave.
For those with a heart-shaped face, try a braided crown to draw attention away from the temples.
When it comes to hair texture, the Dutch braid works beautifully on fine to thick hair.
For fine hair, try using a texturizing spray to add volume and texture.
For thicker hair, try a curling iron to add waves and movement.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
