2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on Romantic Waterfall Braids for All Hair Types.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
One of the things I love about the waterfall braid is how easily it can be adapted to different face shapes and hair textures.
For example, if you have a round face, you can try a more asymmetrical braid to create the illusion of angles.
And if you have very curly hair, you can use a bit of texture spray to add definition and make the braid easier to achieve.
Of course, the key to pulling off a waterfall braid is to keep the hair looking healthy and vibrant.
To do this, I recommend using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, and getting regular trims to prevent split ends.
And don’t forget to use a light hold hairspray to keep the braid in place all day!
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
