2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on 50 Easy Braided Hairstyles for 2019.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
For those with oval or heart-shaped faces, I recommend avoiding too much volume on top.
Instead, focus on creating a balanced, effortless look by distributing the braids evenly throughout the hair.
If you have fine or thin hair, consider adding a few strategically placed hairpins to secure the style and prevent it from falling apart.
For square-shaped faces, I suggest adding a bit more texture and volume on top to create a softer, more rounded look.
You can achieve this by incorporating a few loose, wispy strands around the face and using a texturizing spray to add volume and texture.
Take a moment to review the proportions, textures, and timing notes on this page so each step adapts effortlessly to your own routine.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
