2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on Balayage Hair Color Ideas for Black Hair in 2019.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern—here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
For those with oval faces, I recommend adding layers to the hair to create a more angular, geometric look.
You can also try a side-swept fringe to add some extra texture and interest.
For heart-shaped faces, I recommend avoiding too much layering, as it can make the face appear even wider.
Instead, try a center part and a sleek, straight style to elongate the face.
For those with square faces, I recommend adding some soft, curved layers to soften the angles of the face.
You can also try a soft, relaxed curl to add some extra texture and interest.
For those with fine or thin hair, I recommend using a lightener that’s specifically designed for fine hair, and applying it in a more subtle, sweeping motion.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
