2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on 20 Effortless Braids to Try at Least Once in Your Life.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern—here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
One of the best things about braids is that they can be tailored to suit any face shape or hair texture.
For example, if you have a round face, try a braid that starts at the crown and works its way down to the nape of the neck.
This will help elongate your features and create a more balanced look.
On the other hand, if you have a square face, a braid that starts at the forehead and works its way down to the chin can help soften your features.
When it comes to hair texture, I always recommend using a hydrating mask before braiding to help lock in moisture and prevent dryness.
For fine or thin hair, try using a light-hold hairspray to add texture and prevent flyaways.
And for curly hair, a wide-tooth comb is a must-have for detangling and adding definition to your curls.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
