2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on Curly Hair: How to Achieve a Loose, Effortless Braid.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern.
Here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
One of the best things about this braid is that it can be tailored to suit different face shapes and hair textures.
For example, if you have a heart-shaped face, you may want to emphasize the braid by pulling out more hair to create a more relaxed look.
On the other hand, if you have a square-shaped face, you may want to pull out less hair to create a more defined look.
Additionally, the type of braid you choose can also depend on your hair texture.
For example, if you have fine hair, you may want to use a smaller braid to add definition without weighing your hair down.
If you have thicker hair, you can use a larger braid to add volume and texture.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
