2. Customizing for Your Face Shape & Hair Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my salon guide on Easy Layered Cuts for School.
Every head of hair has its own density, cowlicks, and wave pattern—here is how I adjust the proportions behind the chair.

Matching Layers & Tones to Your Features
For oval faces, try a center part and a longer layer cut that hits the shoulders.
This will help create a balanced look that’s not too boxy or angular.
For heart-shaped faces, go for a side part and a shorter layer cut that hits the chin.
This will help create a more angular look that’s perfect for those with a smaller jawline.
For square faces, try a longer layer cut that hits the shoulders and a side part.
This will help create a more curved look that’s not too harsh or angular.
For fine-to-thick hair, use a point-cut internal layering technique to add volume and texture to the hair.
✂️ Face-Shape & Density Quick Match
- Fine-to-Medium Strands: Keep perimeter weight blunt and add micro-ribbons around the face for visual fullness.
- Thick or Wavy Hair: Use internal slide-cutting to release weight so waves stack without triangle bulk.
- Warm vs. Cool Skin Undertones: Pair golden-olive skin with honey, caramel, or espresso glosses; pair cool undertones with champagne, ash, or mocha ribbons.
